Manhattan Chamber of Commerce Meeting Minutes
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the meeting was held as a Zoom conference call.
June 9, 2020
Present: Donna Bateman, Becky Bouck, Kristy Byers, Mary Kay Cooper, Shari Fiocca and Kevin Sing
Absent: Joe Cerullo, Tim McGrath and Administrative Assistant Mandie Wade.
Shari called the meeting to order at 3:30 pm. Kristy moved and Becky seconded a motion to accept the May secretary’s report. Motion carried. Donna paid the phone bill and Administrative Assistant’s salary for May. Checking account balance for May was $19,687.31 with a total of all accounts as $33,299.12. Mary Kay moved to accept the treasurer’s report. Kristy seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Helping Members: To Mandie’s list of jobs was added calling members who do not respond to email and texts to see when they are open, publicize specials and how are they operating differently. The combined list should be grouped by type of business. It can be approached as a wellness checkup with the Chamber posting on their behalf. She could also encourage businesses to do a Go Live Facebook feed or ask if they need help setting that up. Go Live could be followed on their Facebook page as well as the Chambers. Another question for some of the businesses would be if they are interested in starting a Pub Crawl? Due to space distancing, reserved time slots would be necessary. Another question to ask would be do they need help from the Village to increase their outdoor space? The Wine Bar may want to join with Kat’s again to do an outdoor grilling menu. Pictures of new outdoor seating would add interest to the Monday Memos and other weekly communications. The focus needs to be on retail businesses. Posts need to be on Manhattan Moms, Manhappenin’s as well as the Chamber page. Most people will not search under Chamber. Shari has volunteered to help Mandie with website updates.
Networking: Due to the lack of publicity, the June 3 Zoom meeting only had Donna, and Mary Kay with Shari joining after another event. The June 17th meeting at 1:00 pm has been publicized. Based on the size of the group and their feelings about the meetings continuing will determine if we continue the every other week networking Zoom gathering.
Scholarships: Only two of the board members voted on the essays from high school seniors in our area code. Kristy will resend the essays, which were to cover the Importance of Being, a Leader and What Leadership Roles Have You Done. Board votes need to be into Kristy by June 15.
Fireworks: Donna will check again with Melrose for Sunday, Sept. 6 for fireworks costing $7500. Kevin Molloy will cut a check to Melrose for the money he raised once the event occurs. We might want to encourage businesses to do something special for that night like offering ice cream, water or a small viewing party.
Labor Day Parade: Plans for a parade are still on hold. Mokena has cancelled their 4th of July. New Lenox will not have their Proud American Days. Frankfort’s Fall Festival has been cancelled too. Is it better to plan it and then cancel or just wait and see?
Cruise Night: The June Cruise Night has been cancelled. Other dates are still undecided.
Irish Fest Sales: Becky reported sales of $90 from merchandise ordered many years ago. There is still more merchandise for sale.
The meeting ended at 4:26. The next meeting will be July 8, 2020. Place and method to be determined.
